Mrs. Bessie Mae Smallwood, 94, of Blytheville went to be with the Lord on Monday, September 26, 2011. She was born on December 7, 1916 to Charles Calvin Cobb and Maggie Gill Cobb.
Mrs. Smallwood had resided at Heritage Square Nursing Center for the past year. She had worked there as a nurses' aide for about ten years, when it was known as Parkview Nursing Home.
She was a longtime member of the Clear Lake Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Eastern Star.
Mrs. Smallwood enjoyed making a picnic lunch and spending the day fishing with her family. In addition to being good at fishing, she was also very adept at sewing. She braided rugs and made many pillows by hand which were donated to the Humane Society. She loved working in her gardens, both vegetable and especially the flower garden. Her family always looked forward to her pineapple cake at reunions. Mexican cornbread was also a favorite of hers.
She really enjoyed her grandsons as they were growing up, and they loved playing tricks on her (putting fake snakes in the garden, etc.). She was a special lady, especially to her family and her daughter-in-law said that she was her best friend, and was like a mother to her.
She was preceded in death by her parents Charlie and Maggie Cobb, her husband Roscoe, and a grandson, Randy Smallwood.
She is survived by her beloved son, Charles and his wife Carolyn;
one grandson, Michael Smallwood and his wife Pat;
four great granddaughters: Amber Lee Plunk (and Keith) of Little Rock,
Samantha Collard (and Charles) of Blytheville,
Amanda Williamson and Sara Beth Williamson, both of Blytheville; and
one great-great grandson: Alex Williamson of Blytheville.
Visitation will be held at Carney Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 6 until 8.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 PM at Carney Funeral Home with Dr. Tommy Carney officiating.
Interment will be at Dogwood Cemetery.
