Daniel Burge Obituary

Dan Moody Burge, 83, prominent Blytheville attorney, died Wednesday evening at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis.

Born in Nettleton, he was the son of H.G. Burge and Sibby Ruth Bradford Burge. He received his B.A. degree from Arkansas State University and his L.L.B. and Doctor of Jurisprudence Degrees from the University of Arkansas, where he was a member of the Sigma Pi Fraternity. He began his practice of law in Blytheville in 1952 with the late Max B. Reid and was in active practice for over 50 years. Mr. Burge served as Special Associate Justice of the Arkansas Supreme court on several occasions and served six years as a member and chairman of the state board of law examiners. He organized and established the Blytheville Civil Service Commission with then Chief of Police George Ford. He also served on the Blytheville School District Board of Education and was a long time member and a past president of the Blytheville Area Chamber of Commerce. In 1998-99 he was named Outstanding Defense Attorney for the state of Arkansas, awarded by the Arkansas Association of Defense Counsel.

At the time of his retirement due to poor health, he was senior managing partner in the Firm of Reid, Burge, Prevallet & Coleman.
Mr. Burge served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the battleship, U.S.S. Arkansas and participated in the atomic bomb test at Bikini when it was sunk. He was active in base/community relations while the Blytheville Air force Base was operational. He had been a member of the Defense Orientation Conference Association sponsored by the Department of Defense since 1966.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church for many years, where he had taught a men's Bible class, but he later attended the First Christian Church where he was a Sunday School teacher and a Lay Speaker.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Crete Moody Burge;

one daughter, Danece Burge of Blytheville;

a son-in-law, Tom Daley of Edgemont, AR;

One sister: Margaret Burge Cox of Albuquerque, New Mexico;

four cousins; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Debby Burge Daley;

four brothers: Shoffner Burge, Roy "Buster" Gibson, Jack Burge, and Neal Burge;

and one sister: Mary Osment Crunk.

Funeral Services will be held at Carney Funeral Home in Blytheville on Saturday, July 17th at 11:00 A.M. with Dr. Tommy Carney officiating.

There will be a period of visitation preceding the service from 10 until 11.

Entombment will take place at Dogwood Mausoleum.
